The Executive Director of Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS Inc. USA) Mr Del Christensen visited ABU Zaria with others on 20 June 2016 to seek for the inclusion of YES Alumni in the Peer2Peer project that is meant to counter online extremism in Nigeria.
IRIS Inc. is a not for profit NGO based in Iowa USA. The organization is involved in Education, Peace building and creation of international understanding between the people of America and the rest of the world. Over the last 13 years IRIS has on behalf of the US Department of State coordinated the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) in Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Benue and Sokoto States of Nigeria. The YES Program gives opportunity to less privileged secondary school students to attend an equivalent of SS2 class in US high schools and come back and complete their SS3 classes in Nigeria. Over 285 Nigerian youths have participated in the YES with many of them currently studying in ABU.
Del, on this visit is also here in partnership with the Malali Rotary Club Kaduna, ABUTH Zaria and St. Gérard’s hospital Kaduna to select Doctors, nurses and mid-wives for a 1-week training on the birthing process in Iowa, USA this August. The Rotary project is meant to reduce the maternal mortality rate in northern Nigeria. The Gender Policy Unit has identified issues of common interest to work on by the end of 2017.
